About the event
Mike Lee, Auckland Councillor and chairperson of the Friends of the Hauraki Gulf, will be presenting a talk on the proposed Hākaimangō-Matiatia (NW Waiheke) Marine Reserve.
The 2,350 ha no-take marine reserve was first proposed in April 2021 and formally notified by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in January 2022. 93% of submissions were in favour, including 73% of individuals identifying as Māori. DOC then reviewed the application over a period of 2 and a half years. DOC's report was handed to the Minister of Conservation in 2024, but no progress has been forthcoming. Mike will discuss the next steps.
Mike Lee was formerly chairman of the Auckland Regional Council and is a long-standing active conservationist in the Hauraki Gulf. He is the chair of the Motu Kaikoura Trust.
