Glossary of Te Re Māori Terms

Hauraki – Suburb at the Northern end of the Devonport Peninsula

Kaupapa - topic/subject/plan

Mahi – work

Manu – birds and other winged creatures, e.g. bats, butterflies

Maungauika – Maunga at the Southeastern end of the Devonport Peninsula

Takarunga – Maunga at the Southern end of the Devonport Peninsula

Taonga – treasure or anything prized, including native wildlife

Tamariki – children

Mauri - Life force or vital essence. In this context, it refers to the health and well-being of waterways and the ecosystems they support. 

Repo - Wetland. A vital ecosystem that supports biodiversity, filters water, and helps regulate the climate. 

Awa - River or stream 

Whānau - Extended family or community 

Manu - Bird 

Tūturiwhatu - New Zealand dotterel. A threatened shorebird species found in coastal areas. 

Kuaka - Bar-tailed godwit. A migratory shorebird known for its long-distance flights between New Zealand and Alaska.
