Pest Control Essential Health & Safety

General Safety

  • Footwear: Wear sturdy boots.

  • Weather: Avoid trapping in severe weather or after heavy rain.

  • Terrain: Be cautious on slopes and in bush areas, keep your hands free while walking

  • Intentions: Let someone know your destination and expected return time. Carry a charged phone.

Hygiene & Disease

  • Wear gloves when handling traps, carcasses, lure and toxins.

  • Wash your hands before eating or drinking.

Trap Handling

  • Follow correct procedures for setting and re-luring traps.

  • Extra training is required for DOC200 and possum traps.

Weather Conditions

  • Hot: Stay hydrated, wear sun protection, and avoid peak heat.

  • Cold: Dress warmly, carry waterproof gear, and avoid the coldest times.

Insects & Allergies

  • Wear protective clothing.

  • Carry insect repellent and personal medication.

  • Avoid wasp nests and report issues to the council if on reserves.

Water Hazards

  • Avoid contact with polluted water.

  • Stay clear of steep or slippery banks.

  • Wash hands after water contact.

Animal Encounters

  • Avoid strange or unleashed dogs.

  • Be aware of surprising dogs or owners when exiting from bush areas.

  • Stay calm if approached - do not run or lash out, slowly move away.

  • Call 111 if attacked.

Lone Working

  • Work in pairs when possible.

  • Be aware of private property boundaries and do not enter where permission has not been granted

  • Carry a charged phone and a first aid kit.

  • Wear high-vis clothing or fluoro if possible

  • Leave immediately if you feel unsafe—call 111 if needed.

  • Avoid working in the dark.
